Nearly 2,000 years ago, Mount Vesuvius buried a library of papyrus scrolls beneath volcanic ash.
The scrolls were so badly carbonised that attempting to unroll them risked destroying them.
Then researchers used advanced scanning and machine learning to recover writing from inside the scrolls without physically opening them.
The breakthrough was recognised by the Vesuvius Challenge in 2024.
