According to Ministry of Defence estimates, spending on shipbuilding and repair supported around 32,800 jobs indirectly across the UK economy in 2024/25 – more than any other individual industry receiving MOD spending.
That’s because building a warship doesn’t just create work in the shipyard. It creates demand further down the supply chain for metals, machinery, electronics, engineering and a host of other services.
And that’s what makes the potential naval build-up interesting from an investment perspective. The opportunity may not stop with the big defence contractors. If Britain starts ordering ships and submarines on a much larger scale, the money could ripple through a surprisingly large chunk of British industry.
