Explanation: Surprised? Back in April 2021, the European Investment Bank issued €100 million in digital bonds using Ethereum’s public blockchain.
That’s five years before Britain’s planned digital gilt.
And here’s the important difference. Ethereum is a public blockchain that anyone can access, whereas Britain’s new DIGIT bonds will operate on a private system controlled by HSBC, with access restricted to approved participants.
So, while Westminster is celebrating its move into blockchain finance, European institutions were already experimenting with public blockchain technology years ago.
The technology isn’t new. The question is whether Britain is prepared to embrace its full potential.
